Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) launched a new tip line for reporting undocumented truck drivers on September 9, 2026. The tip line, ran by ICE, asks Americans for suspected undocumented drivers. The move is part of the greater government crackdown on fraudulent commercial drivers following high-profile crashes.

The Washington Sun reported that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) pointed to a series of fatal accidents around the country. However, federal data doesn’t indicate noncitizen drivers cause a disproportionate share of fatal crashes in the U.S. At a congressional hearing in March 2026, Rep. Brecheen (R-Oklahoma) said only 17 of the 5,134 fatal crashes in 2025 involved undocumented drivers.

Immigrant rights groups explained the move uses isolated instances for portraying immigrant drivers as a broad safety threat. Additionally, a July 2026 court filing found the U.S. government used immigration status as a proxy for safety. That filing argued the policy exposed immigrant drivers to increased inspections as “a pretext for immigration arrests”.
