Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) relaxed standards for detainment facilities run by private contractors. ICE explained the move reduces the burden on private detention contractors. Additionally, ICE lets private contractors pay detainees a minimum of one dollar a day for physical labor.

According to AP News, these changes come after a rise in deaths at ICE detainment facilities. In response, the U.S. government enacted a series of changes improving mental health services at detainment sites. However, these changes make governing the detained population more difficult. For example, eliminating requirements for in-person and telephone translators makes it harder for non-English speakers to understand what’s happening around them. The new standards allow generative AI for all informal conversations between detainees and guards. This includes any information detainees give or hear during intake.
