Holding detainees for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) gives local jails and law enforcement an extra source of funding. According to NPR, more than one hundred jails across the country hold ICE detainees for the agency. Local jails get paid between forty-five and one hundred dollars per day for holding detainees.

Taxpayer money usually funds local law enforcement facilities. Holding ICE detainees is a tempting alternative source of funding. For example, four jails in Kentucky earned two million dollars each for holding six thousand people for ICE. The move is part of a larger government effort streamlining detainment and removal operations.
