The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill restoring the Haiti temporary protected status (TPS) designation on April 16, 2026. The bill passed 224-204, according to the Office of the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives. Said bill creates a wholly new TPS designation rather than restoring an older one.

Said bill, called H.R. 1689, mandates a new Haiti TPS designation. If enacted, the designation lasts until January 20, 2029. A new TPS designation grants Haitian nationals in the U.S. eligibility for:

  • Removal Protection.
  • Work Authorization.
  • Lawful presence within the U.S.

TPS benefits last until designation period expires. Said designations are usually based on conditions such as armed conflict, environmental disaster, or other extraordinary circumstances that keep individuals from returning to their country of origin. While the House passed the bill, it still needs to pass the Senate and the President’s approval before becoming law.
