The U.S. Senate passed a budget for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on April 1, 2026. This means the DHS shutdown might end soon. The House of Representatives must formally vote to end the shutdown.

The latest shutdown began January 30, 2026 when Congress couldn’t pass funding for the DHS considering widespread scrutiny of immigration agents during enforcement operations. In response, the DHS sent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to airports for supplementing an overburdened Transport Security Administration (TSA). The Senate agreed on paying DHS employees for the six weeks the department’s been shutdown. However, Congress hasn’t passed a formal budget for the remainder of the 2026 fiscal year. The House hasn’t voted on ending the shutdown yet, but is expected to do so on April 13, 2026.
