The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) made an unannounced update to multiple immigration forms, specifically the I-485, I-131, and N-400 forms. The changes, although minimal, are effective now. Individuals must now submit an updated version of these forms to maximize the possibility of acceptance.

The differences between the previous and updated versions are minor. The main change is that the forms now mention “sex” instead of “gender.” This is in line with President Trump’s executive order from January 20. Other forms that currently ask for gender but have not been changed are the I-765, I-130, and I-90.

While the form updates are effective immediately, there hasn’t been any clarification on whether prior editions won’t be accepted. It’s also not known whether a grace period will be allowed. Whether or not another unannounced update to immigration forms will happen is also not known.
