President Biden is being encouraged to use executive action to provide a streamlined path to lawful status for long-term undocumented immigrants in the U.S. The group of lawmakers further asks the president to reduce processing times for green card requests for undocumented migrants who are married to U.S. citizens. In their letter, the group also suggests steps for the administration to protect DACA recipients so they can update their status. The group of 80 lawmakers cite the potential impact to these groups if Trump is elected in the next U.S. presidential action.
In related news, sources report that Biden is considering restricting the number of migrants who can enter the U.S., relying on executive action to create the policy. Per the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), the president has discretion over who is admitted to the U.S. Through the INA, the daily border crossing at the southern U.S. border can be limited, based on a specific threshold. This is similar to a previously developed proposal that was stopped by Republicans, at President Trump’s urging.
