U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced updates to Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. The new form will be available April 1, 2024. If individuals are using the current form and submitting it online, the existing form must be completed and submitted by March 31, 2024. Online in-process N-400 forms will be removed on April 1, 2024. If filing via paper, the current version of the form will be accepted through June 2, 2024.
The updated N-400 form includes a few updates. Changes to many data elements have been made, including offering an additional gender X option. Other fields have been removed. In addition, the new form gives filers the option to request updates to the Social Security Administration (SSA).
With the April 1, 2024 version, USCIS provides an option to request a new or replacement Social Security number for Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, applicants. Petitioners also have the option to update their immigration status with the SSA, all without requiring a visit to the SSA office.
The feature simplifies the process of submitting the request. The SSA may require additional information, as needed. Individuals using the N-400 with an edition date of 09/17/19 do not have the SSN option, as the SSA questions are not included on that version. The 0917/19 version will only be accepted through June 2, 2024 and only via paper filing.
The updated N-400 will be available for online filing on April 1, 2024. To file online, individuals must have a USCIS online account. As a reminder, there is no fee to create the online USCIS account, and several other benefits are available through the online account.
