The Texas law giving officials the ability to arrest and deport migrants has been further delayed. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Alito extended the five-day pause until March 18, 2024, at 5pm CST. This is the second delay to the migrant arrest law issued by the Justice. The federal government, Texas, and legal service providers filed briefs over the last week, outlining the effects of the law, known as SB4.

Previously, a lower district court temporarily blocked the migrant arrest statute as litigation proceeded. However, the Fifth Circuit granted an administrative stay of the lower court decision, allowing the law to take effect.  The Biden administration asked the U.S. Supreme Court to vacate the Fifth Circuit court order. Before the Supreme Court could respond, Justice Alito placed the law on stay for a week.
