The majority of Americans believe immigration is good for the country, per a recent Gallup poll. Overall, Americans also prefer to keep immigration at their current levels or higher, rather than lower. Still, concerns about the effects of immigration on crime, drug issues, and taxes, though to a lesser extent. The poll, open from June 1, 2023, to June 22, 2023, asked Americans if immigration is valued overall, without specifying legal status. The poll found immigration valued by most Americans.
- 68% of Americans see immigration as good for the country. In 2020, 77% felt positive about U.S. immigration.
- 27% consider immigration a negative. This is largely split between political parties, broken down as follows: Republicans 43%, Democrats 10%, and Independents 28%.
This poll was taken after the ending of pandemic-related regulations, specifically, Title 42 which allowed the U.S. to immediately deport individuals crossing into the U.S. without a legal basis or asylum hearing. Subsequently, additional laws are in place to strongly discourage individuals from trying to enter the U.S. without a legal basis.
The poll asked how individuals perceive the impact of immigrants on seven different areas, asking if they are positively or negatively impacted by immigration.
- Over half of individuals feel the country is enhanced by immigrants when it comes to food, music, and the arts.
- 32% believe immigrants make moral and social values better, with 25% believing immigrants make these aspects worse.
- 55% believe the drug problem, crime, and taxes are made worse by immigration.
- 39% believe immigrants help the economy while 38% believe they hurt it.
- The majority of individuals say there is no effect on job opportunities for Americans and their families, while 26% believe immigrants are a detriment and 18% believe they are helpful.
