Canada is creating a streamlined work permit process for U.S.-based H-1B specialty occupation visa holders. Many high-tech workers are employed by companies with operations in both the U.S. and Canada. As of July 16th, 2023, U.S. H1-B visa holders and their accompanying immediate family members will be eligible to apply to the Canadian Work Permit Program
In addition, the Government of Canada announced updates to their Express Entry system to streamline the process for individuals with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) experience. The country hopes to fill the increasing demand for STEM talent to fill roles contributing to Canada’s technological advancement and economic growth.
Worker shortages are being seen across various sectors in Canada. The Canadian work permit program and updates to the Express Entry process help to attract individuals with work experience or language ability to apply for permanent residence.
The first STEM round for individuals with STEM expertise opens the week of July 5, 2023. Data scientists, software developers and programmers, statisticians and actuaries, electrical and electronics engineers, and mathematicians are the focus of this round. The country plans additional rounds for additional category-based selections, to be announced in the coming weeks.
