The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a consolidated set of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) termination updates affecting multiple countries like Ethiopia and South Sudan. All six updates include automatic Employment Authorization Document (EAD) extensions. Additionally, Ethiopia benefits from a federal court stay pausing its TPS termination. The extensions give TPS beneficiaries extra time for switching to a basis for different employment authorization.
Initially, DHS extended EAD validity for Haiti and Syria until July 10, 2026. Now, EADs for all six TPS designations get automatic extensions per DHS guidance. The following countries an extension of validity until July 17, 2026:
- Burma (Myanmar).
- Ethiopia.
- Somalia.
- South Sudan.
- Syria.
- Yemen.
Additionally, Haiti’s TPS based EADs now last until July 24, 2026. Finally, a federal court order stays termination of Ethiopia’s TPS based EADs. The termination won’t happen until litigation ends. The move comes after the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled in favor of terminating TPS designations for Haiti and Syria on June 25, 2025.
