The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) proposed increasing the required fees for naturalization petitions and related documents. The proposal also eliminates fee waivers for naturalization applications. These changes go into effect on August 22, 2026.
Said proposal raises the cost of applying for naturalization by seventy-five percent. Specifically, the naturalization fee goes from seven hundred-and-sixty dollars to one thousand three-hundred and thirty dollars. The proposal affects Form N-400, application for naturalization. Additionally, the proposal raises the cost of submitting Form N-336 from eight hundred-and-thirty dollars to one thousand four-hundred and seventy-five dollars. Form N-336 is for requesting a hearing after the denial of an N-400 application. Therefore, the seventy-five percent cost increase applies to both forms.
Finally, the proposed adjustments eliminate options for reducing or waiving the new filing fees. This means all applicants pay the full naturalization fee. These changes don’t immediately go into effect. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) gives the public sixty days for commenting on the proposal.
