A group of refugees and nonprofits sued President Trump for his U.S. refugee program suspension and withholding funds for refugee services. The suit argues Trump unilaterally shut down the refugee program, thereby exceeding his authority. Critics claim the President arbitrarily exceeded the limits of his executive power by cutting funding to a program established by Congress without their input.
Introduced through a January 20th executive order, the refugee program suspension affects about 20,300 refugees living in the U.S. Many of these refugees no longer have access to financial support, others find themselves stranded in the middle of the migration process. The suspension also affected the family reunification applications of previously settled refugees.
Organizations like HIAS, Church World Service and Lutheran Community Services Northwest joined the refugees as plaintiffs. The organizations state the suspension caused massive financial uncertainties and cuts in staffing. None of the organizations received any guidance on how to reapply for financial support.
