The extension and redesignation of Yemen Temporary Protected Status is confirmed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The extension is for an additional 18 months, from September 4, 2024, to March 3, 2026, due to ongoing conditions in that country. After review, USCIS determined it is unsafe for individuals to return to Yemen at this time.

The redesignation offers TPS status to an estimated 1,700 Yemeni nationals for their initial application. To qualify, individuals be continually living in the U.S. since July 2, 2024, if they are eligible. The extension offers an estimated 2,300 existing TPS holders to retain status through March 3, 2026, as long as eligibility requirements are met. For individuals who arrived after July 2, 2024, no TPS status is available to Yemeni nationals. Details are provided in the Federal Register.

For F-1 nonimmigrant students who are Yemeni nationals, options for employment authorization are also available. Eligible students can request their initial work authorization, work additional hours during school sessions, and may qualify to reduce the required course load to qualify for the F-1 visa. These options are available to qualifying F-1 student visa holders who are Yemeni nationals and meet qualifications through the TPS designation period.

Reregistration for current Yemen TPS beneficiaries opened on July 10, 2024, and continues through September 9, 2024. Current beneficiaries who submit an extension request may not receive their updated employment authorization document prior to their current document expiration. As such, USCIS is extending current employment authorization documents for qualifying current Yemen TPS holders through September 3, 2025.

Individuals with a pending application under the previous TPS program do not need to file applications again. If USCIS approves a pending application for Form I-821 or Form I-765 under the previous TPS dates, the validity date will automatically be extended through March 3, 2026. The related employment authorization document will be valid through the same date. Individuals applying for the Yemen TPS program for the first time can request TPS-related employment authorization documents, and travel documents during the initial registration period, from July 10, 2024, to March 3, 2026.
