The Department of Homeland Security sent over 100 Chinese migrants who entered the U.S. without a legal basis back to their home country. This is the first such flight in five years. Chinese immigration has been on the rise in last year, entering the U.S. from the southern border. Over 37,000 Chinese nationals were arrested by U.S. border officials at the southern border in 2023. This is ten times higher the previous year.

China has been resistant to receiving migrants back in the country. Earlier in 2024, the U.S. and China reached an agreement of cooperation on migration issues. In May, China’s Embassy in the U.S. stated the country is cracking down on national border issues. Additional removal flights are expected but the timeline is not known.

Ecuador was one of two countries in the region offering visa-free entry to Chinese nationals. As such, it was a popular starting point for Chinese migrants to begin their journey to the United States. However, as of July 1, 2024, following a worrisome increase in irregular migration in Ecuador, visas are now effectively reinstated for Chinese nationals to enter the country.
