Comparing the rate of completed immigration court cases in the first quarter of FY2024 versus prior year, the completion rate is up 50%. Nearly 200,000 cases were adjudicated between October 2023 and December 2023, per Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, or TRAC.

Nearly 64,000 deportation orders were issued during that time frame, amounting to roughly 35% of completed cases, per TRAC. The country with the highest number of deportation orders was Honduras. Less than 16% of immigrants worked with an attorney where removal orders were issued, including unaccompanied children.

Harris County, Texas, which includes Houston, saw the highest number of completed cases. 11,503 cases were completed in that court with an estimated 87,000 remaining open. The second highest number of completed cases were in Los Angeles County at just over 10,000 cases. Miami-Dade County, Florida, came in third, with under 5,500 cases completed.

Although this time period saw a higher rate of immigration court cases completed, the backlog also accelerated. Over the last year, the backlog grew by an estimated 1 million cases and now stands at over 3 million cases as of November 2023. To date in 2024, an additional 686,000 cases have been added to immigration courts.
