The Department of Homeland Security announced the extension and renewal of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for qualifying Cameroon nationals. This extends benefits for 18 additional months, from December 8, 2023, to June 7, 2025, for qualifying individuals. DHS determined that Cameroon is still facing ongoing armed conflict and temporary conditions that make it unsafe for people to return.
Additionally, there is a notice for F-1 nonimmigrant students from Cameroon. This notice allows qualifying students to ask for permission to work, have more work hours while they are in school, and take fewer classes while still keeping their F-1 student status during the TPS period.
TPS extension for Cameroon nationals gives an estimated 2,090 current beneficiaries eligibility to retain their status through June 7, 2025. TPS eligibility requirements remain in effect. The reregistration period opens for a 60-day re-registration period from October 10, 2023, through December 9, 2023. Individuals must file during this period to retain TPS and employment authorization.
The redesignation of TPS for Cameroon gives an estimated 7,900 additional qualifying individuals eligibility to apply for the status. To qualify, individuals must have been continuously living in the U.S. since October 5, 2023, and continuously physically present in the U.S. since December 8, 2023. Other requirements apply. Individuals from Cameroon whose arrival date to the U.S. is after October 5, 2023, are not eligible for TPS. To apply, qualifying individuals can submit their initial registration from October 10, 2023, through June 7, 2025. More information is available from DHS.
