The Biden administration is granting temporary legal status to hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans already in the United States. This allows them to work. There has been an increase in the number of people fleeing Venezuela and arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border. This move is seen as an attempt to address the concerns of Democratic leaders who have been pushing for more support for asylum seekers. However, it also provides fodder for Republicans who argue that President Biden has been too lenient on immigration.

The Department of Homeland Security plans to provide Temporary Protected Status to approximately 472,000 Venezuelans who arrived in the country as of July 31, 2023, making it easier for them to obtain work authorization in the U.S. This decision responds to the demands of Democratic mayors and governors who are struggling to provide for the growing number of migrants under their care. Additionally, there are around 242,700 Venezuelans who already qualified for temporary status before this announcement.

The protection granted to Venezuelans is significant because they constitute a substantial portion of recent migrants to the United States. Venezuela has experienced a political, economic, and humanitarian crisis over the past decade, leading millions to migrate due to unaffordable necessities. While most initially settled in neighboring Latin American countries, many have begun to journey to the United States over the last few years.

It’s important to note that Venezuelans who arrive in the U.S. after July 31, 2023, will not be eligible for this protection, and those who are eligible must apply for it.
