The first group of refugees to be privately sponsored through the Welcome Corps program arrived in the U.S. on Tuesday, June 20, 2023. Included in the group are a multi-generational Congolese family and an individual from Ethiopia. Local communities in the U.S. are supporting the Welcome Corps program nationwide in a new approach to supporting the resettling of refugees.
The Welcome Corps program rolled out in January 2023. The program is a joint effort between the Department of State, private sponsors, and the Department of Health and Human Services. Through this program, individual Americans directly sponsor refugees from around the world and support them during their resettlement process. Specific requirements apply in order to qualify for the Welcome Corps. This private sponsorship connects Americans with refugees from around the world to join their community, supported by financial sponsorship and other elements.
The goal for the Welcome Corp is to gather at least 10,000 Americans in this first year to step up and provide private sponsorships to refugees. The program aims to resettle a minimum of 5,000 refugees admitted to the U.S. through the Refugee Admissions Program. Thousands of Americans have already signed up to learn more through information sessions and email. Anyone interested in getting involved should visit the Welcome Corps website.
