As DACA reaches its 11th anniversary, the program remains in limbo. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was created by President Obama to allow eligible immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children to study and work in the country without fear of deportation. The program is the subject of several legal actions over the last six years.
The DACA program is under consideration in federal court. The federal judge in Texas who is reviewing the case previously found the program unlawful, due to not complying with legal processes. Currently, individuals with DACA protection are able to renew their status. There are approximately 580,000 individuals eligible to renew their DACA status every two years. Since finding the program unlawful, an estimated 400,000 additional individuals are not eligible to apply to the program for the first time. Roughly 93,000 individuals were in the process of applying for DACA when the federal court ended the new-applicant option.
