Now that the House of Representatives elected a Speaker, regular activity has begun. As part of the deal to be elected Speaker, Rep. McCarthy promised to hold seven bills up for voting as soon as possible. The bills cover several topics, including funding for the IRS, abortion, and immigration. As the House has a Republican majority, it is likely these bills may be sent to the Senate. However, as the Senate is Democrat-led, it’s unlikely the bills will move forward at all. Some consider the focus on voting these bills through the House an inefficient use of time.
The immigration bills being considered focus on giving the Department of Homeland Security the option to block entry for some migrants at their discretion as deemed appropriate to maintain ‘operational control’. The other bill proposes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) be notified if a person in the U.S. without a legal basis tries to purchase a gun.
