President Biden stated he does not anticipate any additional travel bans due to the ongoing Covid crisis. Earlier this week, due to the discovery of the omicron variant of COVID, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Eswatini, Malawi, Lesotho, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe were placed on travel restrictions for certain individuals entering the U.S.
The administration is under some scrutiny for the travel ban, with some saying the travel ban will not address the spread of the variant. The President stated the ban is in place to allow scientists some time to better understand the variant, its transmission level, and potential protection for those who are vaccinated. It also gives individuals more time to be vaccinated.
On November 8, travel bans were lifted, moving away from a country-specific ban. Current restrictions include proof of Covid vaccination, recent negative Covid test results, or a combination of the two, depending on the entry point to the U.S.
