Students who have an F-1 status seeking OPT (optional practical training) opportunities can now file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization online if they are filing under one of these categories:

  • (c)(3)(A) – Pre-Completion OPT;
  • (c)(3)(B) – Post-Completion OPT; and
  • (c)(3)(C) – 24-Month Extension of OPT for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students.

The announcement of this change is from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, released today, April 12, 2021.

Qualifying students apply to become eligible for up to 12 months of OPT temporary employment as it relates to their major area of study. The pre-completion authorization is available to those who have not yet completed their academic studies. Post-completion authorization is for those who have completed their educational program. STEM degreed students have the option to apply for a 24-month extension of their post-completion OPT.

Online filing of Form I-765 is available solely to F-1 students for OPT. If someone chooses to submit Form I-765 requesting employment authorization on or after April 15th but are eligible under a different employment authorization category, their fee will be retained, and their application denied.

The USCIS continues to transition to a more paperless approach and will work to expand online filing. The paperless process drives efficiency throughout the process, from checking case status to receiving notice online and more.

Individuals can file 11 USCIS forms online. For a full listing visit the USCIS page.

USCIS continues to accept the latest paper version of these forms by mail.
