The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) reaches a decision on the elimination of Haiti’s temporary protection status (TPS) soon. Said decision comes out on June 30, 2026. A pro-government ruling means the termination of three hundred and thirty thousand peoples’ detention and removal protections.

Background

The U.S. found the TPS program in 1990 for individuals who can’t return to their home countries due to safety concerns. Haiti got TPS status in 2010. The government extended Haiti’s status duration several times since. That was until the U.S. government refused additional extensions.

New Developments

A group of TPS recipients claimed the government didn’t follow the legal requirements for ending TPS protections for Haitians. In response, the Supreme Court agreed to hearing oral arguments on the matter. According to NPR, lawyers for the Haitians filed a motion to dismiss the case on June 22, 2026. Recently revealed documents illustrate the government’s efforts in removing more than the three hundred and thirty thousand individuals officially listed in court documents. The court will ask for a government response.
