The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) announced a hearing the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations for Haiti and Syria. The court scheduled oral arguments on April 29, 2026. The move comes after the government filed an appeal against a lower court’s block on terminating both countries’ designations.
Background
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initially terminated the TPS designation for Haiti in February, 2025. Additionally, the DHS terminated Syria’s TPS designation in September. That same year, a New York City judge blocked the termination of Syria’s TPS designation.
Impact
According to NPR, SCOTUS’ ruling affects up to three hundred and fifty-six thousand people across TPS beneficiaries across the two countries. Previously, the court sided with the government in ending Venezuela’s TPS designation. A final decisions’ expected within a few weeks to a few months.
