The government is partly revoking its’ asylum pause. According to CBS, the government halted thousands of immigration applications on hold during its’ enforcement efforts. The crackdown began in November, 2025. The inciting incident behind the crackdown was a shooting in Washington D.C. The perpetrator was allegedly an Afghan national granted asylum in 2025.

In response, the government paused all asylum processing for a total of thirty-nine countries. However, the government lifted asylum processing pauses for most of these countries. According to CBS, the asylum pauses stay in place for countries considered ‘high risk’ by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The government explained such a move helps immigration agents focus on vetting and immigration enforcement for asylum and visa applications from high-risk countries.
