Secretary of Homeland Security Noem vacated the decision to extend Haiti’s Temporary Protection Status (TPS) by 18 months. Haiti’s TPS will now end on August 3, 2025. The move is part of President Trump’s promise to rescind policies that the current administration considers magnets for non-legal immigration.

TPS status designation gives migrants from approved countries temporary legal stratus to reside in the U.S. even if they entered the country illegally. TPS serves as a safety net for migrants fleeing countries engulfed in war or other dangerous circumstances. Haiti was received TPS status in 2010, with an estimated 520,694 TPS registered Haitian nationals living in the U.S. by July 2024.

The DHS claimed the extension was unnecessary and a tool of the Biden administration to limit President Trump’s capabilities. This move comes a few weeks after the DHS ended the previous administration’s TPS extension for Venezuela. The Trump Administration hopes that ending these designations will discourage migrants from entering the U.S. illegally.
