The U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) fired multiple immigration judges on February 14, 2025. An estimated eighteen midlevel immigration judges and judicial candidates make up the latest round of federal worker terminations by the Trump Administration. The decision places additional pressure to an already significant immigrant case backlog.
2024 saw a record number of new cases filed, increasing the case backlog to 3.6 million by the end of the year. Yet the Trump administration is terminating some of the legal personnel who process immigration cases. Instead, the Trump administration focuses on hiring more deportation staff in order fulfill President Trump’s campaign promises.
Critics stated the terminations were entirely for political reasons. Many of the terminated judges are Biden administration appointees. The Trump administration’s actions break with the long-standing tradition of the Justice Department asking politically appointed U.S. attorneys to resign.
