U.S. consular posts announced changes to nonimmigrant visa protocols effective immediately. The most significant change being revising the eligibility of the interview waiver (also known as drop-box or mail-in) program. The revision marks a return to the narrower pre-COVID criteria.
Automatic eligibility to waive the in-person visa interview now only applies to applicants renewing in the same nonimmigrant visa category, given it expired in the last twelve months. Applicants without a visa seeking an interview waiver will only qualify if they have never been denied a visa and apply to the U.S. consular post in their country of nationality or residence. Applicants that are no longer eligible must reapply for an in-person interview.
Applicants who do not meet the redefined criteria, as noted above, are not eligible for an interview waiver and must schedule an in-person interview. Applicants must plan carefully. Due to ongoing backlogs, long wait times are likely. Working with an experienced attorney can help you understand and plan for the best option.
