The number of allowed immigrants to Canada will drop for the first time in years. This is a notable shift in Canadian immigration numbers. Known to be a welcoming country for immigrants, this shift is in part due to ongoing debate around the policy in the country and rising housing prices.
In 2024, Canada offered up to 485,000 individuals to the country as permanent residents. In 2025, up to 395,000 will be welcomed. 2026 will see 380,000 individuals eligible. For 2027, 365,000 are planned. Temporary residents will also decrease by about 30,000 to 300,000 in 2025.
Between an increase in interest rates and a large influx of immigrants, Canada’s housing prices rose. Polls now show a higher percentage of Canadians believe there are too many immigrants in the country. Canada’s population, overall, has reached record levels.
Canada also capped the number of international students allowed in the country. Further, rules on temporary foreign workers have been tightened. In the second quarter of 2024, there were 2.8 million temporary residents in Canada, including students and workers. Canadian immigration forecasts are tightening to reduce the percentage of immigrants in the country.
