For the month of May 2024, illegal migrant crossings dropped by over 50% compared to the record high reported in December 2023. Generally, illegal crossings rise in the spring. May is the third consecutive month seeing a drop in illegal border crossings per U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) statistics. The drop is in part credited to a tougher stance by Mexico, stopping migrants heading for the U.S.

Illegal migrant crossings at the U.S. southern border, although dropping, remain higher than pre-pandemic levels. A bipartisan bill that includes several actions to address these issues has twice been stalled. While the Biden administration is considering enacting executive action to take some action, there is concern that such action will be delayed due to legal challenges.
