The U.S. Supreme Court is asked to consider the Texas State Law, SB4, scheduled to go into effect on March 10, 2024. The Texas immigration law gives local and state officials the ability to arrest individuals they believe are undocumented migrants. Further, judges will be given the authority to order individuals deemed undocumented and in the U.S. without a legal basis to a port of entry and returned to Mexico, regardless of their country of origin.
The Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to reverse a ruling from the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals that reinstates the Texas immigration law. Previously, a lower court temporarily struck down the law. The Texas state law has been the subject of several legal actions since being signed by the Governor. Without the U.S. Supreme Court’s action, the law will go into effect
Supreme Court Justice Alito paused the law until March 13, 2024, giving the court time to consider their next steps.
