U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released an update on the process of improving the experience for individuals accessing the Department of Homeland Security services. In the announcement, DHS stated they saved 20 million hours annually, following an Executive Order from President Biden, Order 14058, “Transforming Federal Customer Experience and Service Deliver to Rebuild Trust in Government.” The DHS also created the Burden Reduction Initiative (BRI) to improve security, reduce barriers, and build trust and equity. Improvements for exchange visitors and student visas are noted.

The announcement cited simplifying online processes, including using automatic renewals and short forms; offering form submission online, as possible; and using existing already available information to pre-fill forms. DHS cites improvements in credentialing transportation workers, improvements to the Federal Emergency Management Agency through the National Fire Incident Reporting System, reduced time required for cargo transportation, and updates to the student visa process.

For student and exchange visitors, DHS notes improving the experience for all applicants. Using pre-filled documents, sharing data across related collection points, activating electronic information sharing and fee transfers, and offering a mobile-friendly version, DHS notes application time was lowered by 5 minutes for some applicants and groups.
