The end of the academic year is an ideal time for foreign students looking for Designated School Official (DSO) guidance. Having end of the year check ins as soon as possible helps decrease the odds of encountering problems later. Additionally, DSO’s might not be available once the school year ends. All F-1 and M-1 student visa holders need a DSO when signing up for the Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
Check List
Students should seek DSO guidance if:
- They need additional time for completing their program.
- They need an extension from their DSO before their Program End Date.
- They’re planning on summer enrollment.
- They have any changes in their contact information.
- They plan on traveling outside the U.S. during break.
- They plan on taking fewer classes or pausing their enrollment.
- They start a new program in the next academic term.
- Move to a new physical address.
- Transfer to another school.
- Apply for a new visa or change their legal status.
