Analysis of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data points to immigration enforcement having a greater impact on documented immigration rather than undocumented entries. The information comes from a report published by the Cato Institute. Specifically, reduction in legal entries since January 2025 is more than twice the rate of undocumented entries.

Report Analysis

Per the report, legal entries make up roughly seventy two percent of the reduction in entries over the past year. Asylum entries also dropped ninety nine percent between December 2024 and February 2025. Finally, applications for permanent residency fell by fifty percent over the past year.

However, undocumented entries saw an eighty percent decrease from late 2023 to late 2024. While this trend continued in 2025, it didn’t start there. The report illustrates a broad decline in all forms of entry into the U.S., regardless of legal status.
