Over the past year, U.S. immigration authorities detained and removed parents of U.S. citizens. According to CBS news, these operations separated hundreds of thousands of children of immigrants from their parents. Most of these individuals have no criminal convictions on their record.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained fourteen thousand parents of U.S. born children during the first eight months of 2025. That’s more than the number of parents detained in 2022 and 2023 combined. More than four and a half million children of immigrants in the U.S. have a parent at risk of detention or removal. According to CBS, children separated from their detained parents exhibit intense emotional trauma, separation anxiety, and refusing normal daily tasks like going to school or playing.
