In the government’s efforts towards removing detainees as soon as possible, they’ve hired several immigration judges without any relevant experience.
According to the Washington Post, the Department of Justice (DOJ) fired over one hundred judges across the past year. Conversely, the DOJ hired nearly one hundred and forty judges as replacement. Nearly two thirds of the new judges have no prior immigration law experience.
Specifically, only twenty-four percent of the new hires worked for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), or immigration courts. Additionally, the new immigration judges received training lasting only three weeks instead of the traditional five. The downturn in training times raised concerns about the new appointees’ abilities in handling complex cases.
