Throughout the United States, businesses repeatedly blocked legislation pushing immigration enforcement. Many of these businesses originate from areas originally supportive of increased immigration enforcement. According to the Washington Post, the change in support is mainly due to business leaders across numerous industries worrying about immigration policies focused at the state level.
Business leaders, along with Christian groups, helped block immigration enforcement bills across multiple states. In Tennessee, the coalition killed a bill proposing public schools deny enrollment to undocumented children. The same groups stopped a bill mandating employers deny undocumented job applicant in Idaho. Finally, a Utah bill proposing denying vaccine injections for undocumented individuals faced resistance.
Analysis conducted by the Washington Post reveals that out of the two hundred anti-immigrant bills proposed since 2025, less than twenty-four became law. More than eighty of these proposed bills died in review, with others vetoed. Currently, Missouri has the largest number of pending bills at fifteen. Florida has the most killed bills at fourteen. These bills expose divisions within each of these states between the pro-immigration enforcement camp and the pro-business camp.
